The Department of Surgery is a large, vibrant and multifaceted department with a vast array of surgical specialties. The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) is a high-level management position, which reports to the Department Chair, with direct accountability for the Department's entire scope of business operations to include; financial, business cultivation and development, clinical operations, residency and education, human resources, contracts and grant management, marketing, and strategic planning. This position serves as a partner and key advisor to the Chair, Vice Chairs and Division Chiefs in business operations, development and innovation as well as in the programmatic growth and business improvement. The CAO is responsible for assessing the Department's current market position and competitors, identifying new clinical markets to generate new revenue and referral opportunities and developing strategic business plans for new program initiatives and expansion. The CAO sets the departmental goals, objectives, standards and expectations and directs the Department's functional area managers to carry them out within the areas they manage. This position has accountability for the Department's entire scope of business including finance, budgeting, professional fee activities, strategic planning, business development, marketing, research administration, academic and clinical program development, graduate medical education, post-graduate education, and information systems.REQUIRED:-- Graduate-level Degree in Business or Health Care Administration, or related field and/or 10 years of progressively higher-level experience, or combination. Experience in business/financial management and new program development.-- Experience managing a large, very complex, multifaceted department, or business unit. -- Demonstrated management skills, including: developing objectives and policies, forecasting, budgeting, organizational management, and leadership. -- Demonstrated experience growing and managing a clinical practice. -- Experience developing, writing, and implementing full-scale strategic business plans focused on growth and efficiency. -- Demonstrated experience developing faculty compensation and incentive plans-- Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to work with a diverse set of constituents in a high paced environment.-- Experience writing, marketing, and negotiating business plans and contracts.-- Outstanding quantitative and qualitative intellectual abilities. Ability to analyze clinical service lines and academic programs in terms of our ability to compete in serving our community and missions.-- Strong analytical and planning skills and a solid understanding of academic health care and financial operations, including in-depth knowledge and experience with academic funding sources, analysis of clinical market share and trends in health delivery. -- In-depth knowledge and experience with analysis of risks and returns associated with new academic and clinical initiatives; experience with capital formation and capital management -- Demonstrated experience in changing, creating or enhancing a 'brand' or 'image' of an organization, preferably in an academic health system or comparable organization.PREFERRED:-- Advanced degree in business, law, healthcare administration or related field
