Process, prepare, and microscopically examine patient samples submitted for cytological analysis not to exceed the workload volume limits authorized by the Technical Supervisor. Report diagnostic interpretations of specimens examined following standard reporting protocol. Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies and standard operating procedures to ensure the accuracy of slide interpretations and result reporting. Perform duties and responsibilities as a productive team member.
Perform microscopic examination and interpretation of gynecological and non-gynecological specimens using routine laboratory techniques and test equipment.
Evaluate specimen integrity and specimen identification for examination acceptability.
Notify appropriate clinical personnel (nursing unit or out patient facility) of all specimens identified as unacceptable for cytological examination.
Perform, verify, interpret, and record quality control procedures as required on reagents and/or screening procedures.
Identify and perform microscopic examinations according to priority assigned, i.e. RUSH, routine, non-gyne.
Perform and document routine equipment maintenance procedures and function checks.
Set up and perform DNA extraction on cervical specimens. Using the extracted DNA to perform High Risk HPV testing and HPV 16/18 testing.
Perform specimen preparation and staining procedures for cytological examination as needed.
Monitor levels of laboratory materials and supplies to ensure uninterrupted laboratory services.
May create and/or generate laboratory statistical reports and follow up reports.
Report results of examinations and patient diagnosis in response to inquiries from physicians and/or authorized persons in-patient care area.
Document for each 24 hour period, the total number of slides reviewed on-site, as well as, the total number of slides examined or reviewed in any other laboratory or for any other employer; document number of hours spent examining slides in each 24 hour period.
Bachelor’s Degree in clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution or equivalent educations/experience
Eligible for Cytotechnologist certification by American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP)
Preferred Cytotechnologist certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)
