Working under the general supervision of the Chief Financial Officer/Business Manager, the Certified Medical Coder works to maximize Caritas Clinics� revenue potential by ensuring all encounters are properly coded and billed to accurately represent provider service activity. In doing so, the Certified Medical Coder is responsible for carrying out the health care mission and the objectives of the SCL Health System.
Coordinates with staff to get charge information for all patients in an EHR environment.
Reviews provider documentation and applies applicable CPT, ICD 9/10-CM & HCPCS codes and appropriate modifiers for levels of service and procedures according to payer/MAC/coding guidelines.
Verifies and completes charge information in database.
Gathers and verifies all information required to produce a clean claim, including special billing procedures that may be defined by a payer or contract.
Assists in charge capture by reviewing provider documentation and patient documentation. --- I believe this person will need to do 100% review of documentation and charges unless there are comprehensive coding/CCI edits built into Cerner.
Queries provider when clarification on code assignments is needed or documentation is insufficient to support charges.
Completes all charge corrections as a result of internal audit reviews.
