Florida Hospital Orlando seeks to hire a Respiratory Therapist who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.
Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,107-bed Florida Hospital Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. Florida Hospital Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. Our respiratory care team consists of highly skilled and engaged critical thinkers, the vast majority of which are registered therapists with Bachelor or higher degrees. We provide services to a multiplicity of patients experiencing pulmonary complications throughout all areas of our hospital 24-7 to include pediatrics, emergency department, intensive care unit and all nursing units. Under the direction of the physician we incorporate scope of practice principles to evaluate and properly apply various forms of interventional therapies, medical gas delivery, invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilator support, and perform invasive interventions to include intubation and arterial line insertion and diagnostic tests applying evidenced based medicine to ensure implementation of best practice principles. The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the treatment, care, and needs of an assigned group of patients. Adheres to Florida Hospital Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
Critical thinking and patient assessment skills, with the ability to evaluate and modify plan of care
Ability to use applicable infection control standards
Effective oral and written communication skills, including documentation in the patient care record Electronic Medical Records (EMR), and use of computer applications
Airway management skills, including maintenance of a patient airway and care of artificial airways
Ability to provide optimal respiratory support including: administration of oxygen, inhaled medications, lung expansion, and bronchial hygiene
Ability to appropriately operate and manage non-invasive and invasive modes of mechanical ventilation
Ability to perform Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) puncture and analysis and hemodynamic monitoring
For adult care at appropriate campuses, ventilator patient transportation knowledge
Knowledge and skill to care for the pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient in a healthcare delivery system
Associate's degree from a Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary Science program, OR
If hired prior to November 20, 2015, must be a graduate of a Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary program
Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary science (Preferred)
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:
Current, valid state of Florida license as a Certified or Registered Respiratory Therapist
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
Current PALS and NRP certification (Preferred)

Must satisfactorily complete an orientation, a critical care training program, pass a proficiency exam, and be proficient at all applicable procedures defined in the principal duties and responsibilities.
Practices standard precautions and enforces safety regulations per hospital policies on a continual basis. Documents and charges for procedures accurately and completely to ensure quality standards set by the department and hospital.
Responds to Code Blue emergencies immediately providing CPR per the American Heart Association guidelines. Performs airway maintenance including: proper use of manual resuscitators, suctioning, extubating, assists with bronchoscopy, assists with tracheostomy tube insertion, performs LMA insertion, oral and nasal pharyngeal airway insertion, and procedural respiratory support. May perform endotracheal intubation, under direct supervision, or after completion of documented competency.
Properly utilizes patient assessment skills, prescriber care plans, chart review, and conferring with multidisciplinary team to determine efficacy of therapy in a cost and time efficient manner making appropriate recommendations and changes per prescriber care plan. Performs respiratory therapies and oxygen delivery therapies and makes recommendations to the most efficient delivery method per prescriber care plan.
Initiates, maintains, transports and monitors mechanical ventilators to include all conventional modes of ventilation per policy and procedure. Reviews chest radiology reports as necessary and per policy and procedure. Initiates, maintains, and monitors the delivery of heliox therapy.
Properly performs hemodynamic procedures to include: assembly, calibration; assisting with pulmonary artery catheter insertion, calibration; performs cardiac output and hemodynamic / cardiopulmonary profiles. May perform arterial cannulation, under direct supervision, or after completion of documented competency.
Proactively initiates process improvement ideas. Assists with clinical instruction and precepting. Supports hospital and department mission, goals, and department metrics. Performs other duties as requested by department leadership.
Performs blood gas and co-oximetry analysis. Performs quality control as needed. Setup and perform oximetry, apnea, TC, and ETCO2 monitoring as ordered by physician.
May perform waived and/or non-waived Point of Care Testing. If performing non-waived Point of Care Testing, as defined in AHCA rule 59A-7.034, must have approved competency and documented proof (copy of either diploma or transcript, at the highest level of academic achievement) at the time of Florida Hospital non-waived Point of Care training.
