The position is located in the Veterans Health Administration, Salt Lake City Health Care System in the Critical Care Nursing Service. The Surgical Technician is part of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. They participate with the surgical team in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the team. The incumbent of this position must meet all the requirements for ASA eligibility. **THIS IS AN OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT: All applications will be reviewed on a Bi-Weekly bases beginning on the date that this announcement was posted until the vacancy is filled. The cut-off time is 4:30 p.m. (Mountain Time) on the initial cut-off date of 3/22/2021.** The duties are listed below, but additional duties may apply: Sets up sterile fields properly in accordance with applicable laws and policies. Prepares, organizes and maintains highly complex sterile surgical set-ups. Follows all infection control and policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies and equipment. Understands and follows the proper procedure and safety precautions for high level disinfecting instruments. Functions as a primary scrub person for instruments, supplies and equipment during all surgical procedures. Assures all supplies and equipment are available prior to surgical procedures. Performs sponge and instrument counts with the highest degree of accuracy. Accounts for all surgical instruments and equipment during surgical procedures. Recognizes the hazards of anesthetic agents and responds to adverse conditions during the course of procedure. Functions accurately under high stress situations and during complex medical procedures. Participates with surgical team in the planning and implementation of complex procedures. Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure. Possesses extensive knowledge of highly technical medical instruments, the human anatomy and aseptic techniques. Work Schedule: M-F, Rotating on-call, nights, weekends. 0700-1530 Position Description Title/PD#: Surgical Technician/PD10336A, PD10339A, PD10338A, and PD000000 Physical Requirements: Duties regularly require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients, most of which are .stages of unconsciousness. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies for the surgeon. Incumbent must be dexterous in passing instruments to surgeons without compromising principles of aseptic technique and in a manner requiring little or not effort from the surgeon. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
