The position is located in VA Health Care System in Salisbury, NC. The position involves a wide variety of duties involving specimen collection, processing, and preparation of specimens for transport, while assuring accuracy of identification and integrity of specimens for routine and specialized testing throughout all processes. ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties and responsibilities include: Performs phlebotomy using appropriate and established venipuncture techniques and universal precautions. Collects samples with knowledge of the many special anticoagulants and testing requirements for routine and complex testing both pre- and post-collection. Draws sufficient quantities for all ordered tests and performs all special handling or time requirements necessary to maintain the stability of the sample. Maintains complete and accurate labeling of all sample and aliquots. Performs morning/fasting/STAT collections within the appropriate time frames. Assesses integrity of the specimen and determines appropriate action to address any inadequate specimens. Performs a variety of routine laboratory procedures including volumetric measurements, preparation of solutions (i.e. glucose and lactose tolerance test solutions), and preparation of samples for analysis by centrifugation. Work Schedule: Day, evening and night shift with rotating weekends and holidays. NOTE: Intermittent employment is defined as non-full time employment in which employees serve under an excepted or competitive service appointment without a regularly scheduled tour of duty. A position with an intermittent work schedule is sporadic and unpredictable so that a tour of duty cannot be regularly scheduled in advance.
