APHA’s Center for Climate, Health and Equity (CCHE) will work with state affiliates and partners across the country to encourage the adoption of Smart Surfaces that can help reduce rising city temperatures and create more equitable heath outcomes. APHA is seeking an experienced manager for this project with the Smart Surfaces Coalition (SSC) to address extreme heat at the local level. APHA Affiliates and partners in six U.S. metropolitan areas will embark on local policy campaigns with strategic, technical, and operational support from the CCHE and SSC over the course of this three-year project. The position is grant funded and guaranteed for three years.
The senior project manager will be responsible for serving as the CCHE’s primary point person within the SSC and acting as liaison to APHA Affiliates and their core partners. Carry out day-to-day oversight and manage operations of APHA’s work with the Smart Surfaces Coalition. Serve as primary liaison to partners, collecting reports and metrics from grantees and subcontractors as they carry out their work and reporting back to the CCHE team. With guidance from the deputy director and coalition partners, develop programmatic strategic goals, timeline, and action plan. Assist state affiliates and their partners in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of their policy campaigns. Conduct location site visits with grantees. Plan meetings and convenings of grantees and partners, set agenda and serve as facilitator. Design and coordinate topical webinars and trainings for grantees. Draft internal and public facing documents and correspondence. Develop resources and communications materials as needed, liaising with CCHE staff and advisory board members for technical input and/or guidance. Disseminate key messages and resources to grantees as well as the broader public health community. Present at meetings and conferences representing the CCHE. Manage project budget and maintain necessary information and documents required for accounting and grant reporting purposes. The position will supervise the Smart Surfaces Coalition Analyst including the interns and consultants as needed. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Supervisor.
Minimum five years relevant experience, including at least two years involved in organizing/campaigning for policy change. Master’s in public health, public policy, or other related field preferred (additional experience can substitute for degree) Strategic and innovative thinker with experience developing and executing multi-year plans with measurable objectives. Experience managing budgets required, grant management experience a plus. Working knowledge of climate change, health equity and/or environmental justice. Experience applying principles of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in project planning and implementation. Compassionate, inclusive communications skills. Strong organizational and time management skills. Analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Versatile writing ability and ability to communicate complex ideas to broad audiences. Understanding of local government and experience with state or local climate policy preferred. Must be able to travel occasionally.
Position is based in downtown DC near several metro stations. Hybrid work environment.
Hours: 35 hours a week, full-time, Monday - Friday (daytime). Number of openings: 1.
